TL;DR

Key takeaways

  1. 01A landing page conversion is a visitor completing the single goal the page is built for.
  2. 02The conversion rate is conversions divided by unique visitors to that page, multiplied by 100.
  3. 03Most landing pages fail on unclear offers, too many choices and slow forms.
  4. 04Test one change at a time, and run the test long enough to read the result.

Definition

A landing page conversion happens when a visitor completes the goal of a landing page. The goal might be a form enquiry, a sign-up, a download or a purchase. A landing page is built for one goal, which is why its conversion rate is easier to measure and improve than a general site page.

How the conversion rate is calculated

Conversion rate = conversions ÷ unique visitors to the page × 100.

For example, a page with 2,000 unique visitors and 60 enquiries has a conversion rate of 3%. Check that your analytics counts each person once, and that each conversion is a real goal, not a click on a link that leads nowhere.

Common mistakes

  • Too many choices. Navigation links and several calls to action pull visitors away from the goal.
  • An unclear offer. If a visitor cannot say what they get in five seconds, they will leave.
  • Long or badly placed forms. Ask only for what you need to reply.
  • Slow pages. Each extra second of load time loses visitors before they read the offer.
  • Missing trust signals. Visitors want to know who is on the other end. Use real names, real projects and clear next steps.

A small test plan

  1. Record the baseline conversion rate for at least two weeks.
  2. Pick one change with a clear reason, such as a shorter form or a clearer headline.
  3. Run an A/B test until each version has enough visitors to read the result.
  4. Keep the winner, record the result, and move to the next change.

Where this fits

Landing page work sits inside a wider conversion programme. Our CRO agency guide explains how to choose a team that runs this kind of testing properly.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good landing page conversion rate? There is no single benchmark. Compare your own page against its baseline, and against the same offer in a different channel.
