Key takeaways

  1. 01Magento stores often create duplicate URLs through filters, sorting and pagination; control them with canonicals and robots rules.
  2. 02Category and product URLs should be stable, readable and linked from navigation, not from filters alone.
  3. 03Check indexing in Search Console by page type, not only by total count.
  4. 04Speed matters on category pages, where heavy scripts and images slow the page most.

Start with the URL structure

A Magento store can produce many URLs for the same product: through category paths, filters, sorting options and pagination. Decide which version of each page should rank, and make every other version point to it with a canonical tag. Keep product and category URLs stable, because changing them later means redirects and lost signals.

Control filtered and sorted pages

Faceted navigation is the most common source of duplicate content in e-commerce. Filters such as colour, size or price can create thousands of near-identical pages. Options include canonicals to the main category, robots rules for combinations that have no search value, and links that stay in the navigation only for pages you want indexed.

Structure categories and products

Every important category should be reachable through normal links, not only through filters. Use one clear heading per page, a short category description, and internal links to the most important products. Product pages need unique titles and descriptions, and structured data where it matches the content.

Check indexing by page type

In Search Console, look at indexing for categories, products and filtered pages separately. A large count of "Crawled, currently not indexed" pages often means low-value duplicates, thin category pages or a crawl budget problem. Fix the page type with the most duplicates first.

Speed on category pages

Category pages often load the most images and third-party scripts. Compress images, lazy-load below the fold, and remove scripts that do not serve the page. Measure Core Web Vitals on real traffic where you can, not only in a lab test.

Upgrades and SEO

Platform upgrades change templates, scripts and URLs. Before and after an upgrade, crawl the site, compare indexing and check redirects. Our Magento 2 upgrade guide covers the upgrade checks.

Frequently asked questions

Should every filtered page be indexed? No. Index only the combinations that people search for and that have distinct content.

Do I need a Magento SEO extension? Not always. Most of the work is templates, URL rules and content, which an extension cannot fully replace.
