TL;DR

Key takeaways

  1. 01Sprout Social and Planable put a basic US agency social media program at about $500–$5,000 a month; HawkSEM quotes $1,500–$12,000 a month for agency rates.
  2. 02Freelancers in the US charge roughly $20–$150 an hour (Sprout Social) or $50–$150 (HawkSEM); Planable puts New York agency management at $40–$190 an hour.
  3. 03In India, upGrowth's own estimates run from ₹15,000–₹35,000 a month for a basic package to ₹3,00,000–₹5,00,000+ for enterprise programs.
  4. 04Ad spend is a separate budget from management fees: Sprout Social, citing Nutshell, suggests at least $2,500 a month per network for ad campaigns.
  5. 05Compare quotes on deliverables (platforms, posts, video, community management, ads, reporting), not on the monthly number alone.

Published 2026 guides put a basic US social media management program at roughly $500–$5,000 a month (Sprout Social, Planable), with HawkSEM quoting $1,500–$12,000 for agency rates and freelancers at about $20–$150 an hour. Indian agencies quote from about ₹15,000 to ₹5,00,000+ a month (upGrowth). Ad spend is extra.

The ranges are wide because "social media management" can mean three scheduled posts a week on one network, or daily video, community management and paid campaigns across five. This guide names the source for every figure, shows dollar and rupee prices side by side, and keeps advertising spend separate from management fees, which many price guides blur. None of the figures below are Elgrith prices; we give a fixed quote after a free call.

A note for UK readers: we haven't found a named, current source for UK prices in pounds that we could verify, so this guide doesn't quote one. Converting US ranges to sterling would be guesswork.

How do agency, freelancer and in-house costs compare?

Freelancer$20–$150 an hour (Sprout Social); $50–$150 (HawkSEM)One or two networks, steady posting, small budgetsCapacity, holidays, limited video and ads skills
Agency$500–$5,000 a month for a basic program (Sprout Social, Planable); up to $12,000 (HawkSEM)Several networks, content production, paid social, reportingJunior staff on your account; long contracts
In-house specialistAbout $4,700 a month in salary (Sprout Social, citing Glassdoor)Daily community work and fast approvalsSalary is only part of the cost; one person rarely covers strategy, design, video and ads
Tools only (DIY)Software subscriptionsVery small brands with time to postYour time is the hidden cost

In-house costs more than the salary

An in-house hire also needs software, a laptop, training, management time, employer taxes and benefits, plus cover for holidays and sick days. And one person is rarely strong at strategy, copy, design, short-form video, community management and paid ads all at once. That's why many brands combine one in-house coordinator with a freelancer or agency for production and ads.

Freelancer or agency?

A freelancer suits a small, steady scope: a couple of networks, a set number of posts and simple reporting. An agency suits brands that need several skills at once, especially video and paid social, and want continuity when someone is off. Ask both who will actually do the work.

Which pricing models do social media agencies use?

The monthly number on a quote hides very different ways of charging. Knowing the model tells you what happens when your needs change.

  • Monthly retainer. The most common model: a fixed fee for an agreed set of networks, posts, community hours and reports. Easy to budget; check what happens to unused hours and what counts as "extra".
  • Per post or per deliverable. You pay for each post, reel or carousel. Useful for occasional content, but community management and strategy are usually missing.
  • Hourly. Common with freelancers and for ad hoc work, as in the hourly ranges above. Ask for a monthly cap and a timesheet.
  • Project fee. A one-off price for a launch campaign, an account audit, a content shoot or a profile set-up. Good for a defined piece of work with a clear end.
  • Percentage of ad spend. Often used for paid social management. The fee grows as your ad budget grows, so agree a minimum and a cap, and review it when spend changes a lot.
  • Performance-based. Part of the fee is tied to leads, sales or other agreed results. Rare for organic social, and only fair when tracking is reliable and both sides agree how results are measured.

Many agencies combine two of these: a retainer for organic content and community, plus a separate fee for managing ads.

How much should a small business budget for social media?

Work from your goals, not from a price list. A simple way to set a first budget:

  1. Pick one or two networks where your customers already spend time. For many local businesses, that's Instagram and Facebook; for B2B, LinkedIn.
  2. Decide the minimum content you can sustain for six months. Consistency matters more than volume.
  3. Price the management for that scope using the ranges above, or ask two or three providers for quotes against the same brief.
  4. Add a separate ad budget if you want reach beyond your followers, sized to your sales goals and the platform's costs.
  5. Review after three months with real numbers: reach, engagement, enquiries and sales.

Starting smaller and doing it well beats spreading a small budget across five networks.

What's included in a social media management package?

Most agencies sell tiers. The names vary, but the contents follow a pattern. Use this as a checklist when you compare quotes.

InclusionBasicStandardPremium
Networks managed1–22–33–5
Strategy and content calendarLightMonthlyMonthly, with quarterly planning
Posts per networkA few a weekMost weekdaysDaily, plus stories
Design and videoTemplates, static graphicsCustom graphics, some short videoRegular short-form video and shoots

Paid social managementNoSometimesYes (ad spend billed separately)
ReportingMonthly summaryMonthly report with insightsDashboards, monthly review calls

An illustrative tier structure, not a price list. upGrowth's India guide uses Basic, Standard, Premium and Enterprise tiers in a similar way.

The biggest cost drivers are video, the number of networks and community management. Short-form video takes the most production time. Each extra network needs its own formats, not just a reposted image. And replying to comments and messages every day is ongoing work that a "posts only" package doesn't include.

Is ad spend included in social media management fees?

Usually not, and it shouldn't be blurred. There are two separate budgets:

  1. The management fee you pay the agency or freelancer for strategy, content, community and campaign management.
  2. Ad spend you pay directly to Meta, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube or other platforms.

Sprout Social, citing Nutshell, suggests budgeting "at least $2,500" per network per month for ad campaigns. That is a benchmark for ad spend, not for management. Agencies charge for managing ads in different ways: a flat fee, a percentage of ad spend, or a mix of the two. Whichever model you agree, make sure:

  • ad spend is billed to your own card or invoiced at cost, with platform receipts
  • the ad accounts, pages, pixels and audiences are owned by your business, with the agency added as a partner
  • reports show spend, results and cost per result for each campaign

If an agency bundles ad spend into one monthly number, ask for the split before you sign.

How much does social media management cost in India?

upGrowth publishes its own estimates for Indian social media management (updated September 2026):

upGrowth tierMonthly price (₹)
Basic₹15,000–₹35,000
Standard₹40,000–₹80,000
Premium₹1,00,000–₹2,50,000
Enterprise₹3,00,000–₹5,00,000+
Provider type (upGrowth)Monthly price (₹)
Freelancers₹15,000–₹50,000
Boutique agencies₹30,000–₹1,50,000
Full-service agencies₹1,00,000–₹5,00,000+

Source: upGrowth. These are the agency's own estimates. GST is usually added to agency invoices.

Clutch's Delhi listings give a dollar view of the same market: most agencies show minimum projects of "$1,000+" and hourly rates from "Under $25" to "$25–$49".

India's audiences are large, which shapes how brands split budgets across platforms. DataReportal's Digital 2026: India report puts ad reach at 500 million on YouTube, 481 million on Instagram and 403 million on Facebook. For many Indian brands that means short video on Instagram and YouTube comes first.

If you're a Delhi NCR business, see our social media marketing agency in Delhi page; pair it with Google Business Profile management if local search matters to you.

What do social media tools and software cost?

Software is a third line in the budget, after people and ads. A small brand might only need a scheduling tool; a larger team may run social inside a full marketing platform. For example, HubSpot Marketing Hub Professional "Starts at $800/mo" (October 2026), which covers social publishing alongside email, forms and automation.

Ask your agency which tools are included in the fee and which you'll pay for directly. If you leave the agency, you want to keep your content library, scheduled posts and reporting history.

How do you compare social media management quotes?

Line up each quote against the same checklist:

  1. Which networks, and how many posts, stories and videos on each per month?
  2. Who creates the content: original photography and video, or stock and templates?
  3. Is community management included, during which hours, and with what escalation process?
  4. Is paid social included, how is it charged, and is ad spend separate?
  5. What reporting will you get, how often, and does it tie to leads or sales?
  6. Who owns the accounts, ad accounts, assets and content?
  7. What's the contract length and notice period?
  8. Who works on your account, and how many other clients do they handle?

A cheaper quote that excludes video, community management and reporting isn't cheaper once you add them back.

Red flags in a social media quote

  • Guaranteed follower numbers. Followers can be bought; customers can't. Ask how growth will be measured instead.
  • No named deliverables. "Full social media management" with no post counts, formats or hours is impossible to hold anyone to.
  • Accounts created in the agency's name. Your pages, ad accounts and content should belong to your business.
  • Ad spend mixed into the fee with no platform receipts.
  • Long lock-in contracts before the agency has shown results. A short trial or a three-month first term is fairer to both sides.
  • No reporting sample. Ask to see an anonymised monthly report before you sign.
