Key takeaways

  1. 01Agency guides put a basic 1–5 page website in India at ₹5,000–₹50,000 and a business site with a CMS at ₹30,000–₹2,00,000.
  2. 02Ecommerce stores typically cost ₹50,000–₹4,00,000+, and custom web applications ₹2–15 lakh or more.
  3. 03Add 18% GST on development and ₹2,000–₹8,000 a year for hosting; agency maintenance retainers run ₹5,000–₹20,000 a month.
  4. 04Mobile made up 77.76% of web traffic in India in September 2026, so a mobile-first design is part of the price, not an extra.
  5. 05Elgrith gives a fixed quote after a free 30-minute call, so you know the full cost before work starts.

Website cost in India ranges from about ₹5,000 for a basic template site to ₹15 lakh or more for a custom web application in 2026. Agency guides put a 1–5 page static site at ₹5,000–₹50,000, a business website with a CMS at ₹30,000–₹2,00,000, and an ecommerce store at ₹50,000–₹4,00,000+, before 18% GST and yearly hosting.

The spread is wide because "a website" can mean a one-page brochure or a full online store with payments, inventory and customer accounts. This guide breaks the price down by website type, by who builds it, and by the recurring costs that rarely appear in the first quote. Every market range below comes from a published agency or platform guide, linked so you can check it. Elgrith's own work is quoted per project, not from a price list.

Website cost in India at a glance

All of these ranges are published by companies that sell websites or hosting. They are useful benchmarks, not price lists, and they exclude GST.

Cost by type of website

The type of site sets the floor for your budget. Here is what each tier usually includes, how long it takes and who it suits.

TypeWhat you getTypical build timeIdeal for
Landing pageOne long page, contact form, analytics1–2 weeksA single campaign, event or product launch
Static site3–5 fixed pages, no admin panel1–3 weeksFreelancers and new businesses that rarely update content
Dynamic CMS siteAdmin panel, blog, editable pages3–6 weeksService businesses, clinics, schools, consultants
Ecommerce storeCatalogue, cart, payment gateway, order management6–12 weeksD2C brands and retailers
Custom web appLogins, dashboards, workflows, integrations3–6 monthsSaaS products, portals, internal tools
Enterprise siteMulti-language, multi-team publishing, security reviews3–6 months+Large companies and groups

Static vs dynamic

A static site is cheaper because every change goes through a developer. A dynamic site costs more upfront but lets your team edit pages, publish blog posts and update prices without a support ticket. If you expect to change content more than a few times a year, dynamic pays for itself.

Ecommerce and web apps

Ecommerce adds payments, shipping rules, tax settings and order emails. A custom web app adds user accounts, roles and business logic. Both need more testing, and both are where low quotes most often hide missing features.

Redesigning an existing website

A redesign is not always cheaper than a new build. If the current site runs on an outdated theme or a platform you want to leave, the agency effectively starts from scratch and also has to migrate content and redirect old URLs so you keep your Google rankings. If the structure is sound and only the look needs work, a redesign can cost noticeably less. Ask for a short audit before you accept either quote, and insist that every old URL gets a redirect plan.

Who builds it: DIY vs freelancer vs agency vs in-house

Who you hire changes the price as much as what you build.

OptionUpfront costBest forWatch out for
DIY website builderLowest: a yearly plan of ₹2,000–₹6,000 (Hostinger)Very small sites you build yourselfYour time, template limits, platform lock-in
FreelancerLow to mediumSimple brochure or static sitesOne person's availability, no backup, thin documentation
AgencyMedium to highBusiness sites, ecommerce, anything tied to leads or salesVague scopes and junior teams on senior-priced projects
In-house teamHighest (salaries, tools, management)Companies that ship web features every weekHiring time and keeping skills current

Hourly rates: India vs the rest of the world

Most agencies listed on Clutch charge $25–$49 an hour for web development, and the average agency project reviewed on the platform costs about $66,499. Indian agencies usually sit at the lower end of that band. For comparison, a mid-level mobile developer costs $25–$65 an hour in India against $108–$165 in the US. That gap is why many international businesses build in India, and why Indian buyers can get senior work at a fraction of a US budget.

What drives the price?

Four things move a quote more than anything else.

Number of pages and custom design

A template with your logo and colours is fast. A custom design system, with its own layouts, components and illustrations, takes a designer days or weeks. If brand perception matters, pay for design first. Our UI/UX design work usually starts here.

CMS and admin panel

An admin panel lets you edit pages, manage blog posts and collect leads. WordPress, a headless CMS or a custom dashboard all cost different amounts to set up and maintain. Ask which one you are getting and whether your team will be trained to use it.

Ecommerce, payments and integrations

Every integration — payment gateway, shipping partner, CRM, WhatsApp, accounting software — adds build and testing time. India's online buyer base is large: 230 million urban internet users shopped online in 2025, out of 958 million active internet users. Those buyers expect fast UPI checkouts and order updates, so do not cut corners here.

SEO, speed and Core Web Vitals

Mobile accounted for 77.76% of web traffic in India in September 2026. A site that is slow or clumsy on a phone loses most of its visitors before they read a word. Clean code, compressed images, correct headings and structured data cost a little more at build time and much less than fixing them later. Our technical SEO team checks these before launch.

Hidden and recurring costs

The build is a one-time cost. These are not.

Maintenance retainer₹5,000–₹20,000 a monthupGrowth; covers updates, backups and security
Premium plugins, themes and appsYearly licencesCommon on WordPress and Shopify

GST is the one most buyers forget. A ₹50,000 quote that excludes GST becomes ₹59,000 on the invoice.

Three example budgets

Ranges are easier to use when you see them applied. Here is how the published figures above translate into first-year budgets for three common projects. The numbers are illustrations built from the sourced ranges, not quotes.

A clinic or consultancy website

A dental clinic wants eight pages, a blog, an appointment form and Google Maps. That is a dynamic CMS site, which upGrowth prices at ₹30,000–₹75,000. Add 18% GST (₹5,400–₹13,500) and a managed WordPress or cloud hosting plan at ₹3,000–₹8,000 a year. First-year total: roughly ₹38,000–₹97,000, before any ongoing SEO or maintenance retainer.

A D2C brand launching an online store

A skincare brand needs 40 products, UPI and card payments, shipping integration and order emails. Agency-built stores start around ₹1,50,000 in Hostinger's guide. With GST, the build alone is about ₹1,77,000 or more. Add hosting or a platform subscription, paid apps, product photography and a maintenance retainer, and plan for ₹2.5–3 lakh in year one.

A startup building a customer portal

A logistics startup needs customer logins, a shipment dashboard and an admin panel connected to its existing systems. That is a custom web app, which Fuzen puts at ₹2,00,000–₹15,00,000+. The range is wide because each integration and user role adds weeks. A narrow first release is the best way to keep the cost near the lower end.

Red flags in a website quote

A low number is not always a good deal. Watch for these:

  • No written scope. If the quote does not list pages, features and integrations, you cannot hold anyone to it.
  • The domain or hosting registered in the agency's name. You should own both from day one.
  • "Unlimited revisions". It usually means no design process. Ask how many rounds are included instead.
  • No mention of mobile testing or speed. With most Indian traffic on phones, these are not extras.
  • SEO described as "included" with no detail. Ask exactly what is set up: titles, headings, sitemap, redirects, structured data.
  • No support period. Every site needs fixes in the first few weeks after launch.

WordPress vs Shopify vs custom (Next.js): cost comparison

WordPressShopifyCustom (Next.js)

WordPress and Shopify are cheaper to start. A custom build costs more upfront but avoids plugin bloat and subscription creep, which matters if the site is central to your business.

How Elgrith prices a website

Elgrith gives a fixed quote after a free 30-minute call. We ask about your pages, features, integrations and content, then send a written scope with one fixed price and a timeline. Quotes for Indian clients show 18% GST separately; US, UK and international projects are quoted in USD or GBP.

See how quoting works on our pricing page, or read how we work on the website design service page. If you also need an app, our app development cost guide covers that budget.

How to get an accurate quote: checklist

Send every agency the same brief, and you will get quotes you can actually compare.

  1. List your pages. Home, about, services, contact, blog — and any page specific to your business.
  2. Say who will update the site. If your team will, you need a CMS.
  3. Name every integration. Payments, CRM, WhatsApp, booking tools, ERP.
  4. Share three sites you like and explain what you like about each.
  5. State who provides content. Copy, photos and product data are often the biggest delay.
  6. Ask whether GST, hosting and domain are included.
  7. Ask what support covers and for how long after launch.
  8. Confirm you will own the code, the domain and the hosting account.
  9. Ask how SEO is handled — headings, metadata, speed and structured data. Our SEO cost guide explains what ongoing SEO costs once the site is live.
  10. Plan for AI search. Clear prices and answer-first pages help assistants cite you; see how to get recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI.
