SEO cost in India runs from about ₹8,000 to ₹2.5 lakh or more a month in 2026. Agency guides put single-location small businesses at ₹15,000–₹40,000 a month, growing SMEs at ₹45,000–₹1,20,000, and enterprise programmes at ₹1–2.5 lakh+. Prices exclude 18% GST.

What you pay depends on three things: how competitive your keywords are, how big your website is, and how much content and link building the plan includes. Below, we break SEO pricing down by provider, by scope and by city, explain what a monthly retainer should actually contain, and look at whether SEO still pays off now that Google answers many questions with AI. All market figures are from published guides and surveys, linked so you can check them.

SEO pricing by provider

ProviderTypical monthly costGood forTrade-off
Freelancer₹8,000–₹25,000 (Sociolabs)Small local sites, one-off fixesRarely covers technical, content and links together
Agency₹15,000–₹2,00,000+ (Sociolabs)Businesses that need strategy, content and reporting in one placeQuality varies widely; check who actually does the work

In-house hireSalary, tools and managementCompanies with constant content and product changesOne person rarely covers every specialism

Globally, the monthly retainer is the standard model. In Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers, 78.2% charge a monthly retainer, the most common retainer band is $501–$1,000 a month, and 76% of India-based SEOs charge $1,000 or less a month.

How SEO pricing models work

Indian agencies price SEO in four ways. Knowing them makes quotes easier to compare.

ModelHow it worksBest forWatch out for
Monthly retainerA fixed fee each month for an agreed set of deliverablesOngoing growth; the standard modelVague deliverables that drift over time
Project feeA one-time price for a defined jobAudits, migrations, site launchesNothing happens after handover unless you plan it
HourlyBilled on time spentConsulting and fixes for in-house teamsHard to budget; no ownership of outcomes
Performance-basedPaid per ranking or leadRarely a good fitEncourages shortcuts and cherry-picked keywords

Retainers dominate because SEO compounds: technical health, content and links all build on last month's work.

What ₹25,000 vs ₹75,000 a month typically buys

The difference between price points is mostly people-time and content volume. As a rough guide, based on the tiers published above:

Around ₹25,000 a month usually funds a focused plan for one location or a small site: a technical clean-up in the first month, Google Business Profile management, on-page work on your key service pages, two to four new pages or articles a month, some local citations and a monthly report.

Around ₹75,000 a month usually adds a dedicated strategist, more content each month, structured link building and digital PR, conversion work on landing pages, deeper technical work for larger or ecommerce sites, and regular calls. This is where competitive national keywords become realistic.

Neither is "better". The right spend depends on how much a new customer is worth to you and how competitive your search results are.

SEO pricing by scope

ScopeTypical monthly costNotes
Local SEO₹10,000–₹30,000Google Business Profile, local pages, citations, reviews
Ecommerce, under 100 products₹40,000–₹70,000Category and product page optimisation
Ecommerce, 100–1,000 products₹70,000–₹1,20,000Adds faceted navigation and duplicate-content control
Ecommerce, 1,000+ products₹1,20,000–₹1,50,000+Templates, crawl budget and structured data at scale
One-time technical SEO audit₹15,000–₹75,000Scales with site size and complexity
SaaS / B2B and white-label SEOCustomPriced on content volume and deliverables; no reliable public benchmark

Source for the priced rows: Sociolabs. For SaaS, B2B and white-label work, published Indian ranges disagree too much to quote with confidence, so ask for a deliverables-based proposal.

For a business that serves customers locally, much of the value comes from the Google Maps local pack, not just the ten blue links. Local pack rankings depend heavily on your Google Business Profile, your reviews and how close you are to the searcher. That is why a Starter or Growth plan with strong local work often beats a larger generic retainer for a clinic in South Delhi or a showroom in Connaught Place.

How to work out what you can afford

Start from the value of a customer, not from a price list. Suppose a new client is worth ₹60,000 in profit over a year and your website converts 2% of visitors into enquiries, of which one in four becomes a client. You need about 200 extra visitors to win one client. If a ₹30,000-a-month plan can realistically add 200–400 relevant visitors a month after six months, that is one or two new clients — ₹60,000–₹1,20,000 in profit against a ₹30,000 fee. Run the same sum with your own numbers. If the result is marginal, narrow the scope to the services and locations where a customer is worth most.

What a monthly SEO retainer should include

A retainer should buy outcomes you can see, not "SEO activities". Ask for each of these by name.

Technical SEO

Crawl and index checks, Core Web Vitals, structured data, redirects, sitemaps and fixes for broken pages. This is the foundation; content cannot rank if Google cannot read it.

Content

New pages and articles mapped to keywords with real buying intent, plus updates to pages that already rank. Ask how many pieces a month and who writes them.

Mentions and links from relevant Indian and industry sites, earned through useful content, directories and outreach. Avoid anyone selling links by the hundred.

Local SEO

For businesses that serve a city, the Google Business Profile matters as much as the website: categories, services, photos, reviews and consistent contact details everywhere. See our local SEO service.

Reporting

A monthly report built on Google Search Console and analytics data: rankings, clicks, leads and what you are doing next. If a report shows only rankings, ask about revenue.

AI search visibility

Google's AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT now answer many questions directly. A modern retainer should check whether your brand is cited for key prompts and shape content so it can be quoted. We explain how in how to get recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI.

Why cheap SEO usually fails

Plans priced at a few thousand rupees a month cannot pay for a skilled person's time, let alone content and outreach. They tend to rely on automated reports, recycled articles and low-quality links that can do more harm than good. Be especially wary of guarantees. Google's own advice is blunt: "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google" (Google Search Central).

Typical signs of a plan that will not work:

  • Hundreds of "backlinks" a month from directories and blog networks nobody reads
  • Articles that read as if no one in your industry wrote them
  • Reports full of rankings for keywords nobody searches
  • No access to your own Search Console or analytics
  • A long contract with no named deliverables

If budget is tight, spend it on a one-time audit and a focused local plan rather than a cheap retainer that covers everything badly.

How long does SEO take to show results?

Most businesses see measurable movement in three to six months. Local SEO for a single location can move faster; a new domain in a competitive category can take six to twelve months. Judge a plan on leading signals first — impressions, indexed pages, rankings for long-tail terms — and on leads after that.

Is SEO still worth it in 2026, with AI Overviews and ChatGPT?

Yes, but the game has changed. Google still held about 96.5% of search in India in September 2026. What has changed is the click. Pew Research found that users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% without one. Ahrefs measured a 58% lower click-through rate for position one when an AI Overview is shown.

The upside goes to brands the AI cites. Seer Interactive found organic CTR on informational queries with AI Overviews fell about 61%, but brands cited in the AI Overview earned about 35% higher organic CTR than those that were not. Google also says its AI features draw on pages that are indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet (Google Search Central). Good SEO is how you become citable.

How Elgrith prices SEO

SEO vs Google Ads: which costs less?

Google Ads buys traffic immediately, and the traffic stops the day the budget stops. SEO takes months to build, but the pages keep bringing visitors without a per-click fee. Most businesses do best with both: ads for demand you need this month, SEO for the searches you want to own for years. If you run ads, your paid search data also shows which keywords convert, which makes SEO budgets easier to justify.

Checklist: how to choose an SEO agency

  1. Do they audit before they quote? A price without an audit is a guess.
  2. Can they show case studies in your industry or city, with numbers?
  3. Do they name the deliverables — pages, articles, links, fixes — each month?
  4. Who does the work? Ask to meet the strategist, not just the salesperson.
  5. Do you get Search Console access and own every account?
  6. Do they avoid guarantees of #1 rankings?
  7. Do they track AI search visibility as well as rankings?
  8. What is the notice period? Avoid long lock-ins before results.
