Faceted Navigation and SEO: A Guide for 2026
Which filter and sort pages to index, which to canonicalise or block, and how to find the duplicates.

Key takeaways
- 01Faceted navigation creates many URLs from filter combinations; most combinations have no search value.
- 02Index only the filter pages that match real searches and have distinct content.
- 03Use canonicals, robots rules and internal links together, not one of them alone.
- 04Find duplicates by page type in Search Console, then fix the largest group first.
What faceted navigation is
Faceted navigation lets visitors narrow a list by attributes such as colour, size, price or brand. Each filter or combination can create a new URL. On a large catalogue this can produce thousands of near-identical pages, which spreads crawl effort and dilutes the signal to the pages you want to rank.
Decide which pages deserve indexing
Index a filter page only when people search for that combination and the page has distinct content, such as a product set that matches a clear search. Most combinations, such as three colours and a price band, do not meet that test.
Use canonicals, robots rules and links together
- Canonicals: point filtered and sorted pages to the main category page, when the main page covers the same products.
- Robots rules: block combinations that have no search value and would otherwise be crawled endlessly. Use robots.txt carefully, because a blocked URL cannot pass on or receive signals from its canonical.
- Internal links: keep the links to the pages you want indexed visible, and avoid links that lead only to low-value combinations.
Find the duplicates
In Search Console, look at indexing by page type. A large group of "Crawled, currently not indexed" or "Duplicate" pages is the sign of a faceted problem. Fix the largest group first, then recheck after the next crawl.
Keep sorting options out of the index
Sort options such as "price low to high" create near-identical pages. Keep them out of the index with a canonical to the default sort, and do not let them create their own link paths.
Pagination
Paginated category pages need consistent canonicals and clear internal links. Do not canonicalise every page of a series to page one unless page one really covers the same content.
Platform notes
Most e-commerce platforms let you set canonical and robots rules per template. Test changes on a staging site and crawl the result before you publish. For a Magento-specific walkthrough, see our Magento SEO guide.
Frequently asked questions
Does blocking a filter page in robots.txt remove it from search? Not reliably. A blocked page can still be indexed if other sites link to it. Use noindex or a canonical where you need the page out of the index.
How many filter pages should be indexed? As few as needed to cover real searches. There is no fixed number.
