How much does SEO cost in the UK in 2026?
Sourced 2026 UK SEO prices with every figure attributed: agency retainers, freelance day rates, a global benchmark, London vs the rest of the UK, VAT and contract terms, and the red flags in cheap packages.

Key takeaways
- 01Published UK agency retainers mostly sit between about £500 and £5,000 a month, with local SEO at the low end and enterprise programmes above £5,000.
- 02Whito's June 2026 study of 45 published UK prices found a range of £99 to £5,000+ a month, a median of £799 and a median entry tier of £447.
- 03Freelance SEO day rates cluster around £347–£418, according to the platform data Whitehat SEO cites from Malt, YunoJuno and Earns.
- 04Globally, Ahrefs found $501–$1,000 a month was the most popular SEO retainer, charged by 20.4% of the 439 providers it surveyed.
- 05Most UK prices exclude 20% VAT, and contract terms vary from rolling monthly to fixed minimum periods: read them before you compare prices.
Published UK agency SEO retainers mostly sit between about £500 and £5,000 a month in 2026. Local SEO for a single-location business sits at the low end, around £500–£1,200 a month according to Whitehat SEO, while national, ecommerce and enterprise campaigns cost more. Most prices exclude VAT. Scope, competition and who does the work move you up or down.
The trouble with UK SEO pricing is that almost every guide is written by an agency, few say where their numbers come from, and they often contradict each other. Below, every range is attributed to the organisation that published it, with a global benchmark from Ahrefs and a section on VAT and contracts that most guides skip. None of these figures is an Elgrith price.
UK SEO pricing at a glance
| Provider or business type | Published monthly range | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Local SEO, small business | £500–£1,200 | Whitehat SEO (no source given) |
| Local SEO | £500–£2,000 | Rubik Digital (no source given) |
| SME | £1,500–£3,000 | Whitehat SEO |
| Mid-market | £2,500–£5,000 | Whitehat SEO |
| Enterprise | £5,000–£20,000+ | Whitehat SEO |
| Typical agency headline range | £1,000–£5,000 | Rubik Digital |
| All published UK prices (45 sampled) | £99–£5,000+; median £799 | Whito (own study, June 2026) |
| Entry-level packages | Median £447 | Whito |
| Freelancer day rate | About £347–£418 a day | Whitehat SEO, citing YunoJuno, Earns and Malt |
These ranges overlap rather than agree. Whito's median of £799 is useful because it comes from a sample of real published prices, but it is still one vendor's study of 45 price points. The agency tiers are estimates without stated sources. Use the table to see where your budget sits, not as a price list.
How is SEO priced in the UK?
Monthly retainer
The most common model. You pay a fixed fee each month for an agreed mix of technical work, content, links and reporting. It suits SEO because results compound over months.
Project or audit
A one-off fee for a defined piece of work: a technical audit, a site migration, a keyword strategy or a content plan. Useful before a redesign, or when you have an in-house team to implement the findings.
Hourly and day rates
Common for consultants and freelancers. Whitehat SEO cites freelance SEO day rates of about £418 (Malt, 2026), £347 (YunoJuno) and £390 (Earns, December 2025). Day rates work well for audits, training and specialist advice.
Performance-based
You pay per ranking, lead or sale. It sounds safe but often is not: it rewards rankings for easy keywords nobody searches, and it can push providers towards risky tactics. If you consider it, define results precisely and keep control of your accounts.
What does each SEO budget buy?
| Business type | What a realistic plan covers |
|---|---|
| Local SME (one location) | Google Business Profile optimisation, local landing pages, reviews strategy, technical fixes, local citations, monthly reporting |
| National service business | Technical SEO, keyword-led content each month, digital PR or link earning, conversion tracking |
| Ecommerce | Category and product template optimisation, faceted navigation, structured data, site speed, content for buying guides, link earning |
| International | Hreflang set-up, localised content per market, international link earning, separate reporting per country |
At the lower end of the range, expect focus rather than breadth: a plan that does local SEO properly is worth more than one that claims to do everything. Our SEO services are scoped this way, by outcome rather than package name.
What does a typical monthly budget buy in time?
Converting a budget into days makes it concrete. At Whito's median published price of £799 a month and the £390 freelance day rate Whitehat SEO cites from Earns, the budget buys roughly two days of a freelancer's time a month. An agency's day rate is usually higher than a freelancer's, so the same budget buys less agency time, although it may include tools, reporting and a wider team.
Two days a month is enough to keep a small local site healthy and publish a strong page or two. It is not enough to run a national content and link-earning programme. When you read a proposal, ask how many hours or days each month it represents, and what will be done with them.
How do UK SEO prices compare globally?
The best global benchmark is Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers. It found that "$501–$1,000 per month is the most popular monthly retainer rate for SEOs, with 20.4% of respondents charging this rate". The most popular hourly rate was $75–$100, charged by 24% of respondents, and the most popular per-project fee was $2,501–$5,000, charged by 21.2%.
Those are USD figures across all countries, so they do not translate directly into UK prices, and UK-specific splits were not available. They do show that the typical global retainer sits close to Whito's UK median of £799. Plans far below that level are unlikely to fund much skilled time.
Does SEO cost more in London than the rest of the UK?
Usually, yes. Whitehat SEO says London agencies charge a premium of 30–50%, though it gives no source for that figure. The reasons are familiar: higher salaries and office costs. One public London example is Rapid SEO, which publishes monthly plans at £495, £795 and £995 + VAT, so London prices are not always high.
Paying a London premium makes sense when you need in-person workshops or a team that lives in your local market. If you do not, you can get the same standard of work from a regional agency or a team that pairs a London point of contact with engineering elsewhere. That is how our SEO agency in London works.
Do UK SEO prices include VAT?
Usually not. The UK standard VAT rate is 20%, and most agencies quote excluding VAT, as Rapid SEO's "+ VAT" shows. A supplier only has to register for VAT once its taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in 12 months, so some freelancers will not charge it. If your business is VAT-registered, you can normally reclaim it, so compare quotes on their net price.
What contract terms should you expect?
Contract terms vary as much as price:
- Rolling monthly contracts let you leave with short notice. They put pressure on the agency to show progress.
- Minimum terms of three, six or twelve months are common, because SEO takes time to show results. Rapid SEO's plans, for example, are "Pay Monthly : No Contract : 3 Month Min Period".
- Exit terms matter as much as length. Check the notice period, who owns content and links built during the contract, and whether you keep access to Google Search Console, analytics and your Google Business Profile.
Never let an agency own your analytics, Search Console or Business Profile accounts. They should have user access to accounts you own.
What are the red flags in cheap SEO packages?
Cheap packages are not always bad, but these signs should make you walk away:
- Ranking guarantees. Google is blunt: "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google". It also warns: "If they guarantee you that their changes will give you first place in search results, find someone else."
- Hundreds of links a month from directories, private blog networks or sites nobody reads.
- No reporting, or reports that show rankings for keywords nobody searches instead of traffic and leads.
- Secret methods or claims of a special relationship with Google, which Google also tells you to beware of.
- You do not own your accounts or content.
- A long lock-in with no named deliverables.
What does AI search (GEO and AEO) add to the cost?
AI answers from Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity now sit between your customers and your website. Google still dominates UK search, with 91.39% of the market in September 2026 and Bing at 6.08%, so classic SEO remains the foundation. Many plans now add AI visibility work on top: prompt tracking, answer-first content, entity markup and third-party mentions.
This does not have to double the budget. Much of it overlaps with good SEO. Ask whether a quote includes AI visibility tracking and what it reports. Our guide to GEO vs SEO explains the difference, and our AI SEO service covers it in practice.
Agency, freelancer or in-house SEO: which is right for you?
| Option | Best for | Strengths | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freelancer | Local businesses, audits, specialist advice | Lower cost, direct access to the person doing the work | Limited capacity, holiday cover, narrower skills |
| Agency | National, ecommerce and multi-channel SEO | A team covering technical, content and outreach, plus tools | Junior staff on senior rates, vague deliverables |
| In-house hire | Larger businesses with constant SEO work | Deep product knowledge, full focus | Salary, tools and training costs; one person cannot cover every skill |
| In-house plus agency | Growing businesses | Internal ownership with specialist support | Unclear responsibilities unless agreed in writing |
Many UK businesses start with an audit from a freelancer or agency, fix the basics, then move to a retainer once they know what work is needed. That sequence keeps early costs down and makes later quotes easier to compare.
How long does SEO take to pay off?
Most businesses see measurable movement in three to six months. A local business with a well-optimised Google Business Profile can move faster; a new website in a competitive national market can take six to twelve months or more. That is why monthly retainers and minimum terms exist, and why one month of SEO tells you very little.
Judge progress in stages. In the first months, look for technical fixes completed, pages indexed, and rising impressions in Google Search Console. After that, look for rankings on the terms that matter, then organic traffic, enquiries and revenue. A good agency agrees these milestones with you at the start, so the conversation at month six is about evidence rather than hope.
How to compare SEO quotes
- Insist on an audit first. A price without looking at your site is a guess. Our free SEO audit gives you a prioritised list of fixes to compare proposals against.
- Compare deliverables, not package names. Pages, articles, technical fixes and outreach each month.
- Ask who does the work. A senior strategist, a junior executive or an outsourced team?
- Check reporting. Traffic, leads and revenue from organic search, not only rankings.
- Confirm ownership of accounts, content and links.
- Read the contract. Minimum term, notice period and what happens when you leave.
- Ask about AI search. Do they track citations in AI answers?
- Compare net of VAT if your business is VAT-registered.
