How much does a website redesign cost in 2026?
Named US and UK price ranges for a website redesign in 2026, side by side: what moves the quote, redesign vs rebuild vs refresh, the hidden cost of an SEO migration, and a checklist for reading quotes.

Key takeaways
- 01Tenet puts a basic website redesign at $3,000–$15,000, a moderate one at $15,000–$40,000, an advanced one at $40,000–$80,000 and an enterprise redesign at $80,000–$160,000+.
- 02In the UK, SpotDev says most B2B redesigns cost £15,000–£60,000 ex VAT, and a migration on its own runs £8,000–£18,000.
- 03Clutch's verified reviews put the average web design project at $38,105.39 and about 7 months long, with shortlisted agencies charging around $100–$149 an hour.
- 04The biggest hidden cost is a botched SEO migration: Google says to keep redirects generally at least 1 year, so URL mapping belongs in the quote.
- 05Webstacks advises a 10–15% contingency; budget for two years of hosting, licenses and maintenance, not just the build.
A website redesign typically costs $3,000–$15,000 for a basic small-business site in 2026, according to Tenet's published tiers, with moderate redesigns at $15,000–$40,000 and advanced ones at $40,000–$80,000. In the UK, SpotDev puts most B2B redesigns at £15,000–£60,000 ex VAT. Templates, integrations and migration volume drive the spread.
Most redesign cost guides give tiers without saying where they come from, and few separate US from UK pricing. Below, every range is attributed to the company that published it, US and UK figures sit side by side, and we price the part most guides skip: protecting your search traffic during the move. None of these figures is an Elgrith price. We quote each redesign after a free call.

Why the sources disagree
Tenet's "basic" tier tops out at $15,000, while Webstacks' basic tier runs to $30,000. Clutch's average covers web design projects in general, not redesigns only, so it is a sense check rather than a redesign benchmark. Every source here sells websites, which means each defines "basic" around its own typical client. Treat the table as a map of the market, then price your own scope.
What the tiers usually include
Across these guides, the lower tiers tend to mean a theme-based redesign of a small site with light content changes. The middle tiers add custom design, a content migration and a few integrations. The top tiers add multiple stakeholders, large content libraries, complex integrations, accessibility audits and formal SEO migration plans. When two quotes look far apart, check which of these each one assumes.
What drives the cost of a website redesign?
Two redesigns with the same page count can differ in price several times over. These are the levers that move a quote.
- Page and template count. Agencies price by unique templates more than by pages. A 200-page site built from 8 templates can cost less than a 40-page site with 25 bespoke layouts.
- Custom design vs a theme. A purchased theme is cheaper upfront, but every deviation from it costs developer time. Custom design costs more at the start and less to change later.
- A CMS change. Moving from one platform to another (for example, WordPress to a headless CMS) turns a redesign into a rebuild plus a content migration.
- Content and migration volume. Rewriting, reformatting and moving hundreds of posts, products or case studies is often the largest hidden labour line. SpotDev prices a migration on its own at £8,000–£18,000.
- Integrations. CRM forms, marketing automation, payments, search, booking and single sign-on each need building and testing. If your site feeds a CRM, ask how the API integration work is scoped.
- Accessibility. Building to WCAG from the start costs less than retrofitting it after launch.
- SEO migration. URL mapping, redirects, metadata and post-launch monitoring. This is the line item that protects the traffic you already earn.
- AI features. On-site search, chat assistants and personalization add build time and a running cost for model usage.
How do redesign, rebuild and refresh costs differ?
The word "redesign" covers three very different jobs. Knowing which one you need is the fastest way to set a realistic budget.
| Option | What changes | What stays | Relative cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Refresh | Visual styling, typography, images, a few page layouts | Platform, URLs, most templates and content | Lowest |
| Redesign | Information architecture, templates, design system, key journeys | Usually the platform and much of the content | Middle |
| Rebuild | Platform, codebase, templates, often URLs and content model | Your brand and the content you choose to keep | Highest |
A refresh suits a site that works but looks dated. A redesign suits a site whose structure no longer matches how buyers research and convert. A rebuild suits a site on a platform you have outgrown, where every change needs a developer. If the main goal is more leads from paid campaigns, a set of focused landing pages can sometimes deliver the result before, or instead of, a full redesign.
How much does a website redesign cost in the UK?
SpotDev's May 2026 guide puts UK redesigns between £10,000 and £80,000, with most B2B projects at £15,000–£60,000 excluding VAT. UK agencies usually quote ex VAT, and the standard VAT rate is 20%, so a £30,000 quote becomes £36,000 if the agency is VAT-registered and you cannot reclaim the VAT. Registration is compulsory once taxable turnover passes £90,000, so some freelancers and very small studios do not charge it at all.
When you compare UK and US figures, compare scope rather than converting currencies. A UK B2B redesign quote often includes discovery, content design and migration that a US "basic" tier leaves out. For a fuller picture of UK build prices, see our guide to how much a website costs in the UK.
What hidden costs come with a redesign?
The build fee is only part of the spend. These costs rarely appear in the first quote.
SEO migration and redirects
If your URLs change, every old URL needs a permanent redirect to its closest new equivalent. Google's site-move guidance says to keep redirects for as long as possible, "generally at least 1 year". That means the redirect map, testing and monitoring belong in scope, and your hosting setup must keep those rules alive long after launch. A migration that drops redirects can cost far more in lost leads than the redesign itself. Our website redesign SEO checklist walks through each step.
Content
Copywriting, new photography, video and rewriting old pages to fit new templates. If your team is writing, budget their time.
Licenses and platform fees
Themes, premium plugins, fonts, stock images and SaaS tools all renew. Platform plans add up too: WordPress.com lists its Personal plan at US$4 a month, Business at US$25 a month and Commerce at US$45 a month, all billed annually.
Hosting and maintenance
A redesigned site still needs updates, backups and security monitoring. Our website maintenance cost guide gives sourced monthly ranges.
Training and contingency
Your team needs to learn the new CMS. Webstacks advises a "10–15% contingency" on top of the build budget for changes discovered mid-project.
A two-year view of total cost
| Cost line | Year 1 | Year 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery, design and build | Quoted fee | None |
| Content and migration | Often quoted separately | Ongoing content |
| SEO migration and monitoring | Redirect map, launch checks, 90-day monitoring | Keep redirects live |
| Platform plan (example: WordPress.com Business at US$25/mo annually) | US$300 | US$300 |
| Licenses, plugins and fonts | Per vendor | Renewals |
| Hosting and maintenance | Monthly | Monthly |
| Contingency (Webstacks: 10–15%) | Of build budget | None |
How long does a website redesign take?
Clutch's pricing guide says the average web design project in its reviews "lasts for 7 months". Small refreshes can take weeks; enterprise redesigns with migrations and integrations can run longer than Clutch's average. A typical redesign moves through five phases:
- Discovery and audit: analytics, crawl, content inventory, stakeholder goals.
- Information architecture and UX: sitemap, wireframes and key journeys.
- Visual design: design system and page templates.
- Build and content migration: development, CMS setup, content entry, redirects.
- QA and launch: testing on real devices, accessibility, performance and SEO checks, then monitoring.
The slowest phase is usually content, not code. Decide early who writes and approves every page.
How do you read a website redesign quote?
Use this checklist to compare quotes on scope rather than headline price.
- Deliverables: how many templates, pages and design rounds are included?
- Content: who writes, migrates and enters content, and how many pages?
- SEO migration: is there a URL map, a redirect plan, launch-day checks and post-launch monitoring?
- Integrations: which systems connect, and who owns API keys and accounts?
- Accessibility and performance: which WCAG level, and which Core Web Vitals targets?
- CMS training and documentation: how many sessions, and for whom?
- Hosting and licenses: whose accounts are they, and what renews each year?
- Ownership: do you own the design files, code and content outright?
- Change requests: how are extra pages or features priced?
- Support after launch: is there a warranty period, and what does maintenance cost?
If a quote is much lower than the others, it usually leaves out content, migration or SEO, not profit.
How should you budget for a website redesign?
A redesign budget is easier to defend when it starts from goals rather than from a number someone heard. Work through these steps before you ask for quotes.
- Name the business goal. More demo requests, more ecommerce revenue, fewer support calls or a site your team can update without developers. The goal decides which pages matter most.
- Audit what you have. Count templates, pages, posts, products, forms and integrations. Note which pages earn organic traffic and links, because those carry the most migration risk.
- Decide refresh, redesign or rebuild. Use the table above. This single decision moves the budget more than any other.
- Set a range, not a figure. Use the published tiers as a guide: for example, Tenet's moderate tier is $15,000–$40,000 and SpotDev's typical UK B2B band is £15,000–£60,000 ex VAT.
- Add the hidden lines. Content, SEO migration, licenses, hosting, training and Webstacks' 10–15% contingency.
- Plan two years, not one. Platform plans, maintenance and content updates continue after launch.
Where to save and where not to
Save on things you can add later: extra page templates, animation, secondary languages and nice-to-have integrations. A phased roadmap often costs less overall than one large launch, because you learn from real users before building the next phase.
Do not save on the URL map and redirects, accessibility, performance testing or analytics. These are cheap to do during the project and expensive to fix after launch, and they protect the traffic and leads your current site already earns.
