FIG 02 · Quick answer
What is an AI receptionist?
An AI receptionist is a voice agent that answers your business phone, understands callers, books appointments, answers FAQs and transfers to staff when needed. Elgrith builds custom AI voice agents on your existing numbers, connects them to your calendar and CRM, discloses that callers are speaking to AI, and logs every call.
- Calls answered, evenings and weekends included
- 24/7
- Projects delivered since 2015
- 1,000+

FIG 03 · Why it matters
The rules for AI phone calls are already written.
From the US Federal Communications Commission and the UK Information Commissioner’s Office. A summary to plan with, not legal advice.
01
Artificial
AI voices count as “artificial” under US law
The FCC’s February 2024 ruling “recognizes calls made with AI-generated voices are ‘artificial’ under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA).”

Written consent
Before US telemarketing robocalls
The FCC notes the TCPA “requires telemarketers to obtain prior express written consent from consumers before robocalling them.”

Specific consent
Before UK automated marketing calls
The ICO’s PECR guidance: “You must not make an automated marketing call … unless the person has specifically consented to receive this type of call from you.”

FIG 04 · Rules
Rules for AI phone calls in the UK and US
Most of these rules target outbound marketing calls. Answering calls your customers make to you is a different situation, but recording, data and disclosure rules still apply. We build to the rules you and your advisers set.
| Rule | Where | What it covers | How we build to it |
|---|---|---|---|
| TCPA and the FCC’s 2024 ruling | US | AI-generated voices are “artificial”; telemarketing robocalls need prior express written consent | Outbound calls only to contacts with recorded consent, and an opt-out on every call |
| PECR | UK | Automated marketing calls need the person’s specific consent | No automated marketing calls without consent; consent and suppression lists checked first |
| UK GDPR | UK | Personal data in calls, recordings and transcripts | Retention you set, data processing terms, and UK or EU hosting where the providers offer it |
| Call recording notices | UK and US | Telling callers a call is recorded; some US states require every party’s consent | A recording notice in the greeting, and recording switched off where you choose |
| AI disclosure | UK and US | Whether callers must be told they are speaking to an AI | Every agent says it is an AI assistant in its greeting, whatever the minimum rule |
This is a summary, not legal advice. Rules differ by country, US state and sector, and they change. Check your use case with your own legal adviser; we don’t guarantee compliance.

FIG 08 · Running costs
What an AI voice agent costs to run
The build is quoted once, in writing. Running costs depend on call volume, and most are paid straight to the providers. As one example of a third-party cost, Twilio’s US voice pricing page (“current as of August 2026”) lists $0.0085 a minute to receive calls on a local number, $0.0140 a minute to make calls and $1.15 a month for a local number. UK rates differ.
06principles
Telephony minutes
Per-minute charges for calls in and out, plus a monthly fee for each phone number, paid to the telephony provider.
Speech recognition
Turning the caller’s speech into text, usually charged per minute of audio.
Voice
Turning replies into natural speech, charged by the provider per character or per minute.
Language model
The model that understands and replies, charged by usage, so call length and model choice matter.
Hosting and integrations
The service that runs the agent and talks to your calendar and CRM, on accounts you own.
Monitoring and changes
Reviewing calls and updating prompts and knowledge, if agreed in your written scope.
FIG 09 · Guardrails
Built to be honest with callers
An AI receptionist represents your business on every call. These guardrails are in every agent we build.
06principles
AI disclosed up front
The greeting says the caller is speaking to an AI assistant, in your business’s name.
Recording notice
If calls are recorded or transcribed, callers hear it at the start, worded as you and your advisers choose.
A person on request
Callers can ask for a human at any point, and urgent calls skip the queue.
No made-up answers
Answers come from your knowledge base; when the agent doesn’t know, it takes a message or transfers.
No card numbers by voice
The agent doesn’t take card details on the call. It can send a secure payment link instead.
Payment gateway integrationCall review
Transcripts reviewed after launch and prompts updated, so mistakes get fixed rather than repeated.
FIG 10 · Connected
Connected to the tools you already use
A voice agent is only as useful as the systems behind it. These are the services we build it with.
06principles
AI agents
Voice as one channel of an agent that can also act in your other tools.

FIG 11 · Measurement
What we monitor after launch
Measured from your call logs and reviewed at the check-ins agreed in your written scope.
| Metric | What it tells you | How we measure it |
|---|---|---|
| Calls answered | Whether the agent is picking up when you can’t | Telephony and call logs |
| Resolved without transfer | How many calls the agent handled end to end | Call outcomes |
| Transfers and reasons | Where callers still need a person | Transfer logs and summaries |
| Bookings and leads | What the calls turned into | Calendar and CRM records |
| Response latency | Whether the conversation feels natural | Turn-by-turn timings in the logs |
| Misunderstood requests | What to add to prompts or knowledge | Transcript review |
We don’t promise resolution or booking percentages before launch. Targets are set with you once real calls are coming in.
FIG 12 · Process · 6 steps
Design the call first, then build the agent
A fixed written quote after a free call, testing with your real call scripts, and a careful launch.
- Step 01
Call-flow design
The calls you get, what the agent should handle, when it hands off and what it must never do. You get a written scope and a fixed quote.
- Step 02
Prompt and knowledge base
The agent’s greeting, disclosure, tone and answers, written from your content and approved by you.
- Step 03
Integrations
Your phone number, calendar, CRM and transfer routes connected on accounts registered to your business.
- Step 04
Testing with real call scripts
Realistic test calls, including accents, interruptions, background noise and awkward requests, before any customer hears it.
- Step 05
Launch
Usually on overflow or out-of-hours calls first, then wider once you are happy with the results.
- Step 06
Monitoring and tuning
Call reviews, prompt updates and the scorecard, at the check-ins agreed in your written scope.

Straight answers about AI Voice Agents with Elgrith.
It depends on your call flows, the number of phone numbers, the integrations (calendar, CRM, practice systems), languages and call volume. We don’t publish prices: after a free call you get a written scope and a fixed quote for the build. Running costs, mainly call minutes, speech and model usage, are paid to the providers on accounts you own.
