FIG 01 · Dating App Development

A dating app development company that builds safety in

Profiles, matching, chat and video, plus the verification, moderation and age checks that Apple, Google Play and Ofcom look for. Safety is designed in from the first sprint, not added after the first bad review.

FIG 02 · Quick answer

What does a dating app development company do?

A dating app development company designs and builds the profiles, matching, chat, video and payments a dating app needs, plus the safety layer that app stores and regulators check. Elgrith builds dating and social apps with photo and liveness verification, report and block tools, moderation and age assurance, designed for Apple, Google Play and Ofcom rules.

FIG 03 · Why it matters

App stores, regulators and scammers all test a dating app before your users do.

From Ofcom, Apple’s App Review Guidelines and the FTC, read on 23 Oct 2026.

FIG 04 · Store rules

App Store and Google Play rules for dating apps

Dating apps are user-generated content apps, so both stores hold them to their UGC rules, and Apple adds two more that catch new dating apps out. This is what each rule says and what we build for it.

Store rules for dating apps (Apple and Google Play, read 23 Oct 2026)
RuleStoreWhat it saysWhat we build
Guideline 1.2, user-generated contentApple App StoreFiltering of objectionable material, reporting with timely responses, blocking of abusive users, published contact detailsImage and text filters, in-app report and block on every profile and chat, a moderation queue and a support contact in the app
Guideline 1.1.4Apple App StoreOvertly sexual material is not allowed, and Apple names “hookup” apps in this rulePositioning, content rules and image filters agreed before design, so the app is reviewed as a dating app
Guideline 4.3(b), spamApple App StoreDating is a well-established category; Apple won’t accept new dating apps unless they offer a meaningfully different or improved experienceA clear point of difference (audience, format or safety) written into the scope and shown in the review notes
User Generated Content policyGoogle PlayUsers accept terms before posting; moderation must be “robust, effective, and ongoing”; an in-app system for reporting and blocking UGC and usersTerms acceptance at sign-up, the same report and block tools, and moderation tooling your team can run every day

FIG 05 · What you get

What we build

The parts a dating or social app needs, on iOS, Android and web, with the safety layer built into each one.

Two phones on a café table showing matched dating profiles, with a blue like button and two coffees
Dating App Development · built in-house

01

Profiles and onboarding

Photos, prompts, preferences and interests, with photo checks and terms acceptance before anyone can post.

02

Matching

Rules-based filters first, then ranking that learns from likes and replies, with the signals you choose and can explain.

03

Location and discovery

Distance-based discovery with coarse location, so profiles show “nearby” without exposing anyone’s exact position.

04

Chat

Real-time messaging with read states, media sharing, image blurring and scam-pattern checks on links and payment requests.

05

Voice and video calls

In-app calls so people can meet on screen before they share a number, with reporting available during and after the call.

06

Verification

Photo and liveness verification through a specialist provider, with a verified badge that means something.

07

Subscriptions and boosts

Freemium plans, in-app subscriptions and boosts through Apple and Google Play billing, with receipts checked on the server.

08

Moderation console

A queue for reports and flagged content, user history, bans and appeals, so your trust and safety team can act quickly.

FIG 06 · Formats

Dating and social apps we build

Apple treats dating as a saturated category, so the format and the audience matter as much as the code.

  • Niche and community dating

    For
A shared faith, culture, profession, age group or interest
    Difference
Onboarding and matching built around what that community values
  • Video-first dating

    For
People who want to meet on screen before meeting in person
    Difference
Short video prompts, scheduled video dates and live moderation tools
  • Matchmaking services

    For
Matchmakers and agencies that curate introductions
    Difference
A matchmaker console, curated shortlists and client notes alongside the member app
  • Friendship and social discovery

    For
Meeting friends, flatmates or activity partners
    Difference
Groups, events and shared interests in place of one-to-one swiping

FIG 07 · Safety

Safety by design

Trust and safety is the hardest part of a dating app, and the part app reviewers and regulators look at first. We build it into the data model and the first release.

06principles

  • Photo and liveness checks

A selfie check against profile photos, run through a specialist verification provider, so people know a match is real.

  • Report and block everywhere

One tap from any profile, chat or call, with the reason captured and the reported content kept for review.

  • Moderation queues

Reports, automated flags and appeals in one queue, prioritised by risk, with every action logged.

  • Content filters

Text and image filters on profiles and chat, including blurring of unsolicited explicit images until the recipient chooses to view them.

  • Ban evasion controls

Device and account signals that make it harder for a banned user to come straight back under a new name.

  • AI-assisted moderation

Models that flag likely harmful content and scam patterns for a human to review, never a black box that bans on its own.

    AI development

FIG 08 · UK

UK Online Safety Act and age assurance

Dating apps that users in the UK can reach fall under the Online Safety Act. Ofcom’s illegal content Codes came into force on 17 March 2025 and its Protection of Children Codes on 25 July 2025 (Ofcom, page updated 24 August 2026). General guidance, not legal advice.

04principles

  • Risk assessments first

Illegal content and children’s access assessments shape the features, so we build from your assessment rather than guess at it.

  • Highly effective age assurance

Age checks through specialist providers, such as facial age estimation or ID document checks, placed at sign-up where your assessment says they are needed.

  • Age inference is not enough

Ofcom’s Use of Age Assurance Report 2026 (15 July 2026) says age inference “cannot be appropriate for the purposes of the ban or minimum age enforcement”, because it only works after a child has already used the service.

  • Records and reporting

Moderation decisions, reports and complaints logged in a form your organisation can use for its own records and for Ofcom’s requests.

FIG 09 · USA

US age and privacy laws

In the US the rules are state by state, and dating data is often sensitive data. These are the ones we design around. General guidance, not legal advice.

04principles

  • App-store age signals

Texas’s App Store Accountability Act asks app stores to share age signals with apps. Its status has moved through the courts in 2026, so your counsel confirms what applies at launch; we design the sign-up flow so an age signal can be read when it is available.

  • Washington: no geofences near clinics

Washington’s My Health My Data Act makes it unlawful to geofence an in-person health care provider (within 2,000 feet) to track consumers, collect their health data or target them with messages.

  • Health and sexual-health data

The same Act counts information about seeking reproductive or sexual health services as consumer health data, so profile fields and filters are reviewed before they are built.

  • Precise location

Distances rounded, exact coordinates never shown to other users and location history kept only as long as matching needs it.

FIG 10 · Scams

Romance-scam defences

The FTC reports that nearly 60% of people who lost money to a romance scam in 2025 said it started on a social media platform (FTC Data Spotlight, 27 April 2026). Scam defences are product features, not just a policy page.

04principles

  • Link and payment-request checks

Messages with links, gift-card, crypto or wire-transfer requests are flagged, slowed down or shown with a warning.

  • Off-platform nudges

A gentle warning when someone pushes to move the chat to another app early, a common first step in a scam.

  • Liveness before contact

Optional or required verification before messaging, so stolen photos are harder to use.

  • Rate limits and signals

Limits on new accounts messaging many people at once, plus signals your moderators can review together.

FIG 11 · Social

Social and community app development

Many of the same parts power social and community apps: profiles, feeds, chat and the safety tools around them. We build social apps for communities, creators and clubs with the same moderation built in.

04principles

  • Feeds

Posts, comments and reactions, with ranking you control and filters on what gets posted.

  • Groups and events

Private and public groups, events with RSVPs and moderators with their own tools.

  • Creator tools

Profiles, paid memberships and content for subscribers, through store billing where the rules require it.

  • Design for trust

Clear safety settings and reporting that people can find without searching.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about Dating App Development with Elgrith.

We don’t publish prices, because cost depends on scope: one cross-platform app or native apps, how smart the matching is, whether you need voice and video calls, and how much of the safety layer (verification, age assurance, moderation) goes in the first release. Verification and calls also have running costs per use. After a free call you get a written scope and a fixed quote.
