TL;DR

Key takeaways

  1. 01Designveloper prices a lean custom web MVP at $20k–$60k (2–4 months), an MVP with integrations at $60k–$150k and a complex, AI or regulated MVP at $100k–$250k+.
  2. 02A no-code or concierge test costs $2k–$12k, according to Designveloper, and can validate demand before any custom build.
  3. 03Purrweb puts a SaaS MVP at $30,000–$80,000 over 2–4 months.
  4. 04Engineering takes 45–60% of a typical MVP budget; discovery, UX, QA and a 5–10% contingency make up the rest (Designveloper).
  5. 05Running costs start small on official pricing: Vercel Hobby is $0, Apple's developer program is $99 a year and Google Play is a $25 one-time fee; Techtic budgets 15–20% of build cost a year for maintenance.

Published 2026 guides put most MVPs between about $20,000 and $150,000. Designveloper prices a lean custom web MVP at $20,000–$60,000 and an MVP with integrations at $60,000–$150,000, while Metizsoft gives an overall range of $18,000–$70,000. AI, compliance and integrations push costs higher; a no-code test can cost far less.

A minimum viable product is the smallest version of your product that real users can use and pay for, so you can learn before you spend more. Its cost depends less on the idea than on the number of user roles, integrations and platforms you start with. Below, every range is attributed to the guide that published it, and the running-cost table uses only official vendor pricing pages. None of these figures is an Elgrith price.

Why the ranges differ by region

Metizsoft splits its figures by where the team is based: $60k–$150k in the US and Canada, $40k–$100k in the UK and Europe, and $18k–$70k in India. The scope is the same; the hourly rate is not. That is why an "average MVP cost" means little until you know who is building it and what is in scope.

Where does the money go in an MVP budget?

Designveloper breaks a typical MVP budget into five phases. The split is a useful way to check whether a quote has left something out.

PhaseShare of budgetWhat it covers
Discovery10–15%Problem framing, user research, scope, technical plan
UX and UI design15–20%Flows, wireframes, prototype, visual design
Engineering45–60%Frontend, backend, integrations, infrastructure
QA10–15%Testing on real devices, bug fixing, security checks
Contingency5–10%Changes discovered during the build

A quote with no discovery or QA line is not cheaper. It moves those costs to after launch, when they are more expensive.

How much does a SaaS MVP cost?

Purrweb's August 2026 guide puts a SaaS MVP at "$30,000-$80,000" over 2–4 months, a mid-size SaaS product at "$80,000-$150,000" and an enterprise platform at "$150,000-$300,000+". Its guide is aimed at SaaS development specifically, which is why its floor sits above a lean web MVP.

SaaS adds work that a simple web app does not need:

  • Multi-tenancy: keeping each customer's data separate and secure.
  • Authentication and roles: sign-up, single sign-on, teams, permissions and audit trails.
  • Subscription billing: plans, trials, upgrades, invoices and failed-payment handling. Stripe lists Stripe Billing at 0.7% of Billing volume on its UK pricing page, on top of card fees.
  • Admin tools: internal dashboards to support customers.
  • Integrations: CRMs, accounting tools and webhooks that business customers expect. Scoping these early, as part of your API integration plan, avoids surprises.

If your MVP is really a customer or partner portal on top of existing systems, a web portal build may be a closer fit than a full SaaS product.

Web app MVP or mobile app MVP: which costs more?

A web MVP is usually cheaper and faster to change: one codebase, instant updates and no store review. A mobile MVP makes sense when the product depends on push notifications, the camera, location, offline use or habitual daily use.

Mobile adds store costs. The Apple Developer Program fee is 99 USD a year, and Google Play charges a US$25 one-time registration fee. Building for both platforms with one cross-platform codebase, such as React Native, keeps the build closer to a single-app cost. Our React Native vs native guide explains when that trade-off works.

A common pattern is a web app first, with a focused landing page to collect sign-ups, then a mobile app once usage shows what people do every day.

What does an MVP cost to run in its first year?

The build is a one-time cost; running costs start on launch day. This table uses only official pricing pages, read in October 2026.

How much do AI features add to an MVP?

AI features change the cost shape of an MVP. Designveloper puts complex, AI or regulated MVPs at $100k–$250k+, because they need more data work, evaluation and safeguards.

There is also a recurring line most quotes leave out: inference. Every time a user triggers an AI feature, you pay the model provider per request or per token. Budget for it like a utility bill:

  • Estimate usage: requests per user per day multiplied by expected users.
  • Pick the smallest model that works, and test whether a cheaper one gives acceptable answers.
  • Cache repeated answers and limit free-tier usage.
  • Track cost per active user from the first week.

How can you cut MVP cost without cutting quality?

  1. Validate before you build. A no-code or concierge test ($2k–$12k, per Designveloper) can prove demand first.
  2. Pick one user type and one core job. Every extra role multiplies screens, permissions and tests.
  3. Use managed services for auth, payments, email and hosting instead of building them.
  4. Start on one platform, usually web, or use one cross-platform codebase for mobile.
  5. Design with a component library rather than bespoke screens for every state.
  6. Keep QA in the budget. Cutting testing saves money only until the first bad release.
  7. Write down what is out of scope, so change requests are decisions, not surprises.

Is a cheap MVP a false economy?

Sometimes. A very low quote is usually cheap for one of three reasons: the scope is smaller than you think, testing and discovery are missing, or the code is built in a way that will need rewriting once you have users. Each one shows up later as a cost.

That does not mean you should spend more than you need. A cheap test is the right choice when you are still validating demand. The mistake is paying for a quick test and then trying to scale it into the real product. Decide upfront which you are buying:

  • A validation test (no-code, concierge or a clickable prototype) to learn whether people want the product. Expect to throw it away.
  • A production MVP built on a codebase you will keep, with proper authentication, data design, testing and deployment.

If your MVP is a production MVP, ask how the codebase will handle your next 12 months of features, not just launch day. A good answer covers the data model, how new features are added, automated testing and how releases are deployed.

Should you hire an agency, a freelancer or an in-house team?

OptionBest forWatch out for
FreelancerA tightly scoped MVP with one main skillA single point of failure; gaps in design, QA or DevOps
AgencyA complete MVP with design, build, QA and launchFixed scope; make sure you own the code and accounts
In-house teamLong-term product development after validationHiring time and cost before you know the product works

Many founders use an agency for the MVP, then hire in-house once the product has paying users. Whichever you choose, insist on owning the code, repositories, cloud accounts and app store listings. US founders can also work with our software development team for New York clients.

How long does it take to build an MVP?

Designveloper puts a lean custom web MVP at 2–4 months, and Purrweb gives the same 2–4 months for a SaaS MVP. A no-code test can run in weeks. A typical custom MVP moves through these stages:

StageWhat happensOutput
DiscoveryInterviews, scope, user flows, technical planA written scope and backlog
DesignWireframes, clickable prototype, visual designA tested prototype
BuildSprints with regular demosA working product on staging
QA and launchDevice testing, security checks, store submission or go-liveA live MVP
LearnAnalytics, interviews, quick fixesThe next roadmap

The schedule slips most often in discovery and approvals, not in coding. Agree who makes product decisions, and how quickly, before the build starts.

What should an MVP include, and what should it leave out?

An MVP should do one job well for one type of user. A useful test: if a feature does not help you learn whether people will use and pay for the core job, it can wait.

Usually in the MVPUsually later
Sign-up and loginSingle sign-on for every provider
The core workflow, end to endSecondary workflows and edge-case automation
Payments, if you are testing willingness to payComplex plans, coupons and usage billing
Basic admin toolsFull self-serve admin and reporting suites
Analytics and error monitoringCustom dashboards
Accessibility and security basicsMulti-language support

Cutting features is not the same as cutting quality. The features you keep should work properly, on real devices, with real data.

Questions to ask before you sign

  1. Who owns the code, design files, repositories and cloud accounts?
  2. What exactly is in scope, and how are changes priced?
  3. How often will we see working software?
  4. What testing is included, and on which devices?
  5. What support is included after launch, and for how long?
