FIG 01 · PWA Development

Progressive web app development for fast, installable, offline-ready apps

PWAs in React and Next.js that install from the browser, work offline and send notifications where devices allow, from one codebase, with an honest answer on what iPhones support.

FIG 02 · Quick answer

What is a progressive web app?

A progressive web app (PWA) is a website that installs like an app, works offline and can send notifications, from one codebase. Elgrith builds PWAs in React and Next.js with service workers, a web app manifest and caching, tells you plainly what iPhones support, and packages for Google Play when you need it.

FIG 04 · Decide

PWA vs native app vs cross-platform

A progressive web app is a website built with service workers and a web app manifest so it can be installed, work offline and re-engage users. It is not always the right answer. Here is how a PWA compares with native and cross-platform apps.

PWA, native app or cross-platform app?
Progressive web appNative app (Swift, Kotlin)Cross-platform (React Native, Flutter)
CodebaseOne, for web, Android, iPhone and desktopOne per platformOne for iOS and Android, plus a separate website

Many products start as a PWA and add a native or React Native app later. We build all three, so the backend and APIs carry over.

FIG 08 · iPhone

What PWAs can and can’t do on iPhone (2026)

iPhone support has improved, but it still differs from Android. WebKit added Web Push for Home Screen web apps in iOS and iPadOS 16.4. We tell you plainly what works before you commit.

06principles

  • Install: yes, by hand

Users add the PWA to the Home Screen from Safari’s Share menu. We design an install guide into the app.

  • Offline: yes

Service workers and caching work in Safari, so pages and data you choose stay available offline.

  • Push: Home Screen apps only

Web Push works on iOS and iPadOS 16.4 or later, only once the PWA has been added to the Home Screen and the user opts in.

  • Background tasks: limited

Background sync is limited on iPhone, so we sync when the app is opened instead of relying on it.

  • App Store: restrictive

Apple’s review is strict for wrapped websites. If you need the App Store, we usually recommend a native or React Native app.

  • Android: the fuller picture

Chrome on Android offers install prompts, push and Google Play distribution through a Trusted Web Activity.

FIG 09 · Measurement

What we measure instead of a “PWA score”

Lighthouse no longer gives a PWA score, and installability rules have changed. These are the checks that matter to your users.
