WordPress by the numbers.

Why the platform is still a safe bet, and why the plugins on it need a plan. From W3Techs, Patchstack and WordPress.org.

FIG 04 · Choose your build

Custom theme, page builder or headless?

Three ways to build on WordPress. Each one changes how fast the site is, how your team edits it and what it costs to run. We recommend one after discovery, and we’ll tell you when the simplest option is enough.

Builders are not wrong: we use them when a client asks and the trade-off makes sense. Most sites we build are custom block themes.

FIG 07 · Security

Our plugin-risk policy

WordPress core is actively maintained. The risk lives in plugins, so every build follows these rules, and the care plan keeps them in force after launch.

06principles

  • Fewer plugins, each one vetted

We check every plugin’s maintenance history, update cadence and known issues before it goes in. If a few lines of custom code do the job, we write them instead.

  • Updates tested on staging first

Core, plugin and theme updates run on a staging copy, get checked, then go live with a backup taken just before.

  • Locked-down logins

Strong passwords, two-factor login for admins, limited login attempts and only the user roles each person needs.

  • Firewall and monitoring

A web application firewall such as Cloudflare or Wordfence, malware scans and uptime checks, with alerts going to the people who act on them.

  • Off-site backups you can restore

Scheduled backups stored away from the server, with restores tested, not just assumed.

    What maintenance costs in 2026
  • A care plan after launch

Updates, backups, security monitoring and small changes, with the scope and response times agreed in your written plan.

FIG 09 · Process · 7 steps

From Figma to first publish

A fixed written quote and a phased plan before work starts. The most common cause of delay is content that isn’t ready, so we plan content from the first week of the project, not the last.

  1. Step 01

    Discovery and content plan

Goals, page structure, integrations and a content inventory. You get a written scope, a phased plan and a fixed quote.

  2. Step 02

    Design in Figma

Wireframes, then full designs for key templates on mobile and desktop, approved before anything is built.

  3. Step 03

    Block-based build

Your custom block theme, blocks, patterns and integrations, built on staging with a demo at the end of every sprint.

  4. Step 04

    Content migration

Pages, posts, media and metadata moved across, with a 301 redirect map for every URL that changes.

  5. Step 05

    QA: speed, accessibility and SEO

Core Web Vitals, accessibility checks against WCAG 2.2 AA, cross-browser and device tests, and a full SEO crawl of staging.

  6. Step 06

    Launch and training

Go-live with backups, monitoring and Search Console in place, then a training session so your team can publish on day one.

  7. Step 07

    Care plan

Updates, backups, security monitoring and improvements, on the plan and terms agreed in writing.
