FIG 01 · B2B E-commerce Development
A B2B ecommerce agency that starts from your ERP
Wholesale and trade stores with company accounts, contract price lists, quotes, net terms and cXML or OCI punchout, engineered from the ERP outwards on Shopify, BigCommerce, Adobe Commerce or a custom stack. Platform limits are dated, so you choose on facts, not a partner badge.

FIG 02 · Quick answer
What does a B2B ecommerce agency do?
A B2B ecommerce agency builds online stores for wholesale and trade buyers, with company accounts, customer-specific price lists, quotes, net terms, purchase orders and ERP sync. Elgrith builds B2B ecommerce on Shopify, BigCommerce B2B Edition, Adobe Commerce or custom stacks, including cXML and OCI punchout to procurement systems such as SAP Ariba and Coupa.

FIG 03 · Why it matters
B2B buyers expect retail-grade ordering. Their contracts don’t.
From Shopify’s changelog, the US Census Bureau and cXML.org, checked on 23 Oct 2026.

3
Active B2B catalogs on Shopify’s non-Plus plans
Since 2 Apr 2026, Basic, Grow and Advanced can sell wholesale with native B2B features, including company profiles, payment terms, volume pricing and up to 3 active B2B catalogs. Unlimited catalogs, direct assignment, partial payments and deposits stay on Plus.

$340.2B
US retail e-commerce sales in Q2 2026
The Census Bureau put Q2 2026 retail e-commerce at $340.2 billion, 17.1% of total retail sales. That is retail, not B2B; we cite it only as context. The next release is due 19 Nov 2026.

cXML
Punchout is still the procurement handshake
cXML.org’s current version (1.2.071, updated 14 Aug 2026) still includes “the widely-used PunchOut feature” that procurement systems use to shop a supplier’s catalog.

FIG 04 · Platforms
Choosing a B2B platform in 2026
Every platform now claims B2B. What differs is where contract pricing lives, how many catalogs you get and how buyers pay. Native features below are from each vendor’s documentation, checked 23 Oct 2026; we build on all of them and resell none.
| Shopify, non-Plus plans | Shopify Plus | BigCommerce B2B Edition | Adobe Commerce B2B | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Accounts | Company profiles | Company profiles | Company accounts and a Buyer Portal | Company accounts |
| Catalogs and pricing | Up to 3 active B2B catalogs, volume pricing | Unlimited catalogs, direct catalog assignment | Mapped to your price rules in discovery | Shared catalogs |
| Quotes and orders | Payment terms | Payment terms, partial payments and deposits | Sales quotes; invoices for POs paid on net terms | Negotiable quotes, purchase-order approvals, requisition lists |
| Fits when | A small number of price lists and a simple wholesale channel | Many price lists or deposits, blended with DTC | A dedicated buyer portal on a SaaS platform | Complex catalogs and approval rules, with in-house or partner engineering |
Sources: Shopify changelog (2 Apr 2026), BigCommerce B2B Edition overview and Adobe Experience League, Commerce B2B (updated 1 Oct 2026), read 23 Oct 2026. Plan prices are not shown: check them on each vendor’s pricing page for your region. A custom stack fits when none of these match your pricing or approval rules.

What a B2B ecommerce agency builds
A DTC store sells one price to anyone. A B2B store sells the right price to the right buyer, on the right terms, and tells the ERP about it.

FIG 07 · Accounts
Company accounts, buyer roles and approvals
Your customer is a company, not a person. The store needs to know who can browse, who can order and who must approve.
04principles
Company hierarchy
Parent companies, locations and ship-to addresses, each with its own catalog, terms and tax settings.
Buyer roles
Admins, buyers and viewers, with permissions your customer’s admin can manage without calling you.
Approval workflows
Orders over a set amount route to an approver before they reach you, where the platform supports it or we build it.
Requisition lists
Saved lists for regular orders, shared across a buyer’s team.
FIG 08 · Pricing
Customer-specific catalogs, contract price lists and quotes
Pricing is a data problem first. We find where contract prices live today, then build the store to read them, not to retype them.
04principles
One source of price truth
Contract prices stay in your ERP or pricing system and sync to store price lists, so sales and the store never disagree.
Catalogs per account
Restricted assortments and price lists by customer or group, within each platform’s catalog limits (dated in the table above).
Volume and tier pricing
Quantity breaks and minimums shown before checkout, not discovered on the invoice.
Quotes and RFQs
Request-for-quote from the cart, negotiation with your sales team, expiry dates and conversion to an order.
FIG 09 · Payment
Net terms, purchase orders, credit limits and invoices
Trade buyers pay on account. The store has to respect the terms and credit limits your finance team set.
05principles
Net terms
Payment terms per account, carried from the ERP into checkout and onto the invoice.
Purchase orders
PO number capture at checkout, passed to the ERP and printed on every document.
Credit limits
Available credit checked before an order on account is accepted, with a card fallback.
Invoices and statements
Open invoices and statements in the buyer portal, with online payment of what is due.
FIG 10 · Punchout
Punchout: cXML and OCI integration with Ariba, Coupa and others
Large buyers shop from inside their procurement system. Punchout lets them open your catalog, fill a cart and send it back for approval as a requisition.
04principles
cXML punchout
The XML protocol published at cXML.org: a PunchOutSetupRequest opens a session in your store, and a PunchOutOrderMessage returns the cart. Purchase orders can follow as cXML too.
OCI punchout
SAP’s Open Catalog Interface returns the cart as hidden form fields (NEW_ITEM-…) posted back to the buyer’s HOOK_URL, per SAP’s OCI documentation.
Tested with each buyer
Every procurement system configures punchout a little differently, so we test each buyer’s connection, credentials and field mapping in their test environment first.
Order and invoice return
Purchase orders from the procurement system routed into your store or ERP, with order confirmations and invoices sent back where the buyer requires it.
API integration
FIG 11 · Product data
Product data and PIM implementation
B2B catalogs carry specs, documents and thousands of variants. When spreadsheets stop coping, a PIM becomes the single place product data is written.
04principles
Data model
Attributes, families, units and relationships designed around how your buyers search and filter.
Migration
Product data cleaned and moved from spreadsheets, the ERP or an old store, with checks on every field we map.
Channel publishing
One product record published to the store, marketplaces and print or PDF catalogs.

FIG 12 · Process · 6 steps
Data first, then the storefront
Discovery, data, integration, launch: a fixed written quote after a free call, ERP mapping before design, and punchout tested with real buyers before go-live.
- Step 01
Free call
Tell us what you need to launch or fix and what you have already tried. We ask about your audience, systems, team and deadlines first.
- Step 02
Discovery
We map your ERP, pricing rules, catalogs, customer accounts, terms and procurement connections, and agree which system owns each piece of data.
- Step 03
Fixed written quote
A written scope and a fixed quote, with the timeline, platforms, access and hand-over agreed before any work starts.
- Step 04
Sprints with weekly demos
Data model and integrations first, then the buyer portal and storefront, each shown working in a weekly demo with real accounts and prices.
- Step 05
Launch
Pilot accounts go live first, with orders checked against the ERP, then wider roll-out by customer group.
- Step 06
Support
Monitoring of syncs and punchout connections, new buyer onboarding and improvements, as agreed in your written scope.

FIG 15 · Who it’s for
B2B commerce for teams that sell on contract.
Same method everywhere: start from the ERP, get the prices right, then build the store.
4 audiences
Manufacturers
Dealer and distributor portals.
Manufacturers selling through dealers and distributors get account-based catalogs, contract pricing, spec sheets and reorders, synced with the ERP.
- Dealer-specific catalogs
- Spec sheets and documents
- ERP order sync
- Punchout for large accounts
Wholesale
Wholesale and distribution stores.
Distributors with thousands of SKUs get fast search, quick order by SKU, volume pricing and net terms.
- Quick order and CSV upload
- Volume and tier pricing
- Net terms and credit limits
- PIM for large catalogs
B2B + DTC
One store or two?
Blended stores keep one catalog and one team, but need careful catalogs and pricing. A dedicated portal suits very different buyers or terms. We recommend after discovery.
- Blended B2B and DTC
- Dedicated wholesale portal
- One catalog behind both
- Clear price separation

FIG 17 · One store or two?
Blended B2B/DTC store vs a dedicated B2B portal
Blended B2B and DTC on one store, or a dedicated wholesale portal? Both work. The right answer depends on how different your buyers are.
| Blended store | Dedicated portal | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | The same products sold to consumers and trade buyers | Different assortments, terms or buying processes |
| Catalog | One catalog, with B2B price lists per account | A separate catalog built for trade buyers |
| Running cost | One store and app stack to maintain | Two to maintain, or a portal app on top |
| Risk | Trade prices leaking to consumers if set up badly | Data drifting between two stores |
| Platform fit | Shopify (non-Plus or Plus) or BigCommerce | BigCommerce B2B Edition, Adobe Commerce or custom |
FIG 18 · Compare
B2B ecommerce vs B2C ecommerce development
| B2B ecommerce | B2C ecommerce | |

| Customer | A company with several buyers and approvers | One person |
| Price | Contract, volume and account-specific | One public price, plus promotions |
| Payment | Net terms, POs, invoices, credit limits, cards | Cards and wallets at checkout |
| Ordering | Quick order, reorders, quotes, punchout | Browse, cart and checkout |
